Tate is a Recruitment Coordinator at Spark the Journey where they focus on outreach efforts to support the recruitment of both students and mentors for Spark’s high school and Year Up programs. They serve as a resource for both prospective students and mentors to ensure they are receiving the necessary information and material to become a part of Spark and begin their journey.
What made you want to work at Spark the Journey?
I really resonate with Spark’s mission. As someone who grew up with a single mom and had to take out loans to pay for college, I was thrilled to find an organization that dedicates itself to securing young people’s futures in a way that is unique to them and their goals.
Who’s a person in your life that ignited a spark in your journey?
As cliché as it may sound, my mom ignited a spark in my journey. As a single mother of three, she did anything necessary to provide for all of us, even if that meant having nothing left for herself. Most of my childhood, she worked the night shift at a hospital so that she could be there for us after school for sports and whatever other extracurriculars we were a part of. To me, she exuded the “grind culture.” Seeing where she is now, working but also living for herself, she has shown me that life can throw you every adversity known to man – but with support from your village and self-accountability, everything can and will be okay.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
It really depends on the day. I try to stay active, so I like to go running (but don’t ask me about my times because they’re high lol) or playing in the SKDC kickball league. Otherwise, I spend cozy days inside teaching myself different crochet projects.
If you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be?
I would have to say Kurt Cobain. I LOVED the band Nirvana growing up and Kurt had such an interesting story. I would love to hear his side of things and just vibe.
What three traits define you?
Compassion – I like to see the good in people and I love to help. I studied developmental psychology, so I have a fascination with hearing people’s stories and seeing how they became who they are in the present moment.
Open minded – I like and appreciate flexibility. I think it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and try new things and to be open to hearing about different perspectives.
Energizing – I love to bring a different kind of energy wherever I am. I enjoy pulling people out of their shells and forming different ideas. I want everyone and everything to flourish.
What’s the most rewarding aspect about your role at Spark the Journey?
The relationship cultivation has been AMAZING. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people, whether during interviews or alongside our Development team. It gives me an opportunity to grow professionally as well as see Spark maintain and create connections for longevity.
What’s one thing you think more people should know about Spark the Journey?
The Programs team is COMPETIVE. We love to play games and when we do, it’s either silent because we’re all focused and determined to win, or it’s loud because we are excited, laughing, and/or determining which rules in Uno count and which do not.
